History of the Nymphs
Of Varda and the Nymphs
Without hobby, Varda, Lady of the Stars and wife of Manwë, oftentimes would move about Valinor, the guarded realm, looking upon the shoulders of her comrades in search of that which may silence the boredom of her heart. Upon hearing of the creation of the Dwarves by Aulë, Varda became interested in the creation of a race of her own. She left Valinor and hid in the clouds. There she fashioned a people of all females. She knew they would not be hidden from Ilúvatar, but knew they were hidden from the Valar who payed their attention more to the Elves and the happenings of Middle Earth as Melkor continued his rampage, rather then looked to the skies. Ilúvatar allowed her to continue with her works as he was curious of the outcome it would acquire.
Varda named her children the Nadanador, which means "beauty from the sky" or "column of delicate light". In the tongue of the Quendi they were called the Nymphs, who were often believed to be mythical since they were little seen by the people. The first gift she gave to them was the gift of beauty, a profound beauty that would surpass even the beauty of Varda herself. The next gift was that of healing. This was to become their most important gift, as it was a healing almost as powerful as that of a Vala.
Varda worked swiftly, and was careful not to let any other of the Valar to know of her creation, for she knew they would cause her to discontinue her works. She stayed always alert. Finally, Manwë came to notice her absence, and yearned greatly for her love again. He came to her, and she hid her creation deep in the clouds. She knew he approached so she came to him and met him halfway. She used her grace and charisma to protect the secret of her people and persuade Manwë that she would soon return. Manwë left content, full of heart, and fully forgetting his reason for coming to the clouds (for he was lasting dazzled and light-hearted from his encounter with Varda).
Varda quickly returned to her work. She began work on the gift of flight. This she could not do. Some say it was due to the lasting effect of her husband’s near folly of her secret, or that she hastened to the point she could not clearly function for fear of other interruptions. The Nymphs’ lack of flight would make them never truly immortal. Varda continued her works nonetheless and gave them the next better of gifts than flight: the gift of teleportation within limit, or temporary dimensional warp abilities. For Protection, the Nymphs were now allowed to flee instantly and not be followed.
She made their minds quick and clever, yet fun loving. She made their senses acute, to quickly sense danger and to greatly perceive the environment. She also gave them Gifts she even knew naught, for though they were yet without soul, they still understood her actions. They learned charm, cunning, protection, detection, love of beauty, and fast of duty. Tried though she may have, Varda could not give them life or souls. How this was done for the Dwarves by Aulë vexed her greatly. She sought to find the answer, to somehow bleed the answer from Aulë’s lips without his knowing. She left the clouds and rejoined with Manwë, until she left again to dance about Aulë.
Of Ilúvatar and the Nymphs
For long did the bodies of the Nymphs hang lifeless in the clouds before Ilúvatar came again the hold them in his mind...
As you can see, this is yet to be completed.
progress is actually being made on this though, so dont think its been abandoned!!
